Well we're all back now, safe and sound but to a chillier England which is intermittently being covered in snow. Or as Folly put it 'back to drinking warm beer in a cold place rather than the other way around'.
Although we didn't quite reach the 'Dead City', we're never the less very pleased with what we did manage to achieve. As detailed maps of what lies ahead simply aren't available, the GPS data we obtained will allow us to accurately purchase the next best thing, satellite photography. As this is expensive and sold by the square mile, we can now specify precisely what we need which will make it significantly more affordable.
As regular "Incidents of Travel" readers will probably have noticed, besides Sherpa Fran, we added a new dimension to this trip, namely video. Previously, we've purposefully avoided this medium as too often, we've seen how so many people travel to incredibly inspiring places but end up just looking at them through the narrow perspective of their viewfinders rather than experiencing them with all of their senses. We used video this time though with a clear objective in mind, not the little rough cut video that we posted from the field (which did have a couple of technical problems which are now resolved) but something much more ambitious.
Ever since we realsied what we had come across, a first hand account of an epic but largely forgotten journey into the unknown that had inadvertently come across an ancient city that has remained undiscovered for 145 years, we've felt that this really was a project ripe for a television documentary. What we'd like to do is replicate the entire journey again, following what is effectively a verbal treasure map and whilst heading towards the prize, compare the enviroment and wildlife then and now, assessing the contemporary effects of humans upon them. Even today, it's still a considerable undertaking which would require funding and logistical support way beyond our own pockets.
So with what we've already got 'in the can' and the information garnered on this trip, we intend putting together a short promotional film on CD to aid our pitch to the TV people. Encompassing adventure travel, hands on archaeology and the natural world, it pushes all the right interest buttons and we're optimistic that they'll be as keen as we are to discover the truth about the 'Dead City'.
So we've lots of homework to do now and we'll keep you posted on our progress.
